Becoming Money Exercise
Often our relationship with money can have a profound impact on how safe we feel in the world. This view of money can be informed by your childhood, an experience at work, friendships etc. It is something we don’t often explore, but can impact us on a daily basis. Therefore, it can be helpful to explore whether your relationship with money comes from a place of fear or safety, abundance or lack. You might find this exercise a helpful way to explore this:
- With your eyes closed, take a few deep breaths and come into the space. I want you to imagine out in front of you, money.
- As you look at the money, you can see that it has a shape and colour, maybe a sound, maybe a temperature, is it moving or still, how is it arranged, how much of it is there? Use all your senses to describe what you see and feel in your imagination.
- Now, in just a moment, keeping your eyes closed, take a big step forward, stepping into the money itself. It’s as if, for a short period of time, you are the money.
Now that you are the money itself, ask yourself a few questions, to explore your feelings.
- As Money, what are you feeling?
- As Money, what is the story being told about you?
- As Money, what are the feelings at the core of that story?
- As Money, what is it you want the most?
- As Money, what is it you need?
- As Money, what do you value?
Now step out of the money, back into your own self. Take a moment to reflect on your feelings towards money.
- Do you think your feelings about money are accurate?
- Do you think your feelings about money are helpful or a hindrance?
- Would you like your feelings to be different? If not – perfect!
- If you would like them to be different, simply rewrite the story you are telling yourself. Close your eyes again and imagine how you would like a space containing money to look and feel. Just realising there is an alternative can be enough to change the story!
