Fertility – The Facts

Stress

Research indicates that stress and depression are implicated in ovulation irregularities and abnormal sperm development.  Infertility and its treatment causes stress and depression.

Lower levels of measurable physiological stress indicate higher IVF success and psychometric tests indicate that feeling relaxed favours conception.

Stress and Traditional Chinese Medicine

When the qi in the Heart becomes obstructed then the messages which the heart should send to the ovaries via the Bao vessel do not arrive and eggs are not stimulated to ripen.

The Liver qi which is responsible for overseeing the smooth running of many cycles in our bodies can also be upset if daily routines are not regular.

Stress related Liver qi stagnation can be responsible for tension in the fallopian tubes preventing the passage of the egg, sperm or embryo.

Exercise

Exercise mobilises qi and Damp, increases blood circulation, reduces weight, reduces insulin resistance and prevents depression.

Sleep

Sleep is important in preserving Spleen qi and Liver blood, regulating Heart qi and regenerating Kidney yin and yang.

Alcohol – Women

Even modest drinking (<5 units a week) can delay conception.  Alcohol consumption in the month before IVF attempt reduced success nearly 3 times.  Alcohol consumption in the week before egg pick up increased chance of miscarriage 2 times.

Alcohol – Men

Modest drinking (<5 units a week) appears not to delay normal conception.  Alcohol consumption the month before IVF reduces success 2 and a half times.  Drinking alcohol each day in the week before sperm collection reduces success more than 8 times.
