Smudging
What is Smudging?
Smudging is an ancient spiritual ritual that involves burning sacred plant materials to cleanse yourself or your space of negative energy. As the fragrant smoke drifts through the environment, it is believed to purify and restore balance, replacing negativity with a positive, uplifting flow.
This beautiful ritual can help release the effects of personal trauma, clear unwanted energy from others, or bless and cleanse a new home, creating a peaceful and welcoming atmosphere.
Spiritually, your hopes, dreams and intentions become part of the ritual, carried within the smoke and released into the universe.
Other benefits
Many people find that smudging promotes a sense of calm and wellbeing. Research suggests it may help improve sleep, soothe anxiety, lift your mood and reduce stress. Tradition also teaches that smudging can literally lift one’s spirits by clearing away negative energy.
Some people also report improved focus, enhanced memory and an energising effect after a smudging ritual.
And, as an added bonus, your home is left with a wonderfully calming and divine aroma.
What plant materials should I use?
A variety of plants can be used for smudging, with the most common being:
-
White sage
-
Cedar
-
Sweetgrass
-
Lavender
My personal favourite is white sage, which has long been associated with purity and powerful cleansing properties, making it ideal for clearing negative energy from the home.
Sage is also known for its antimicrobial properties and has traditionally been used to help cleanse the environment of bacteria, viruses and allergens, as well as unwanted energy.
Mindfulness
To get the most from your smudging ritual, approach it with a calm and relaxed mindset. There is no need to rush—slow down, be present and allow yourself to fully experience the process.
I recommend taking a few moments for a simple meditation or mindful breathing exercise beforehand to help you feel grounded and focused.
Materials
You will need a few simple tools:
-
A smudge stick (sage bundle)
-
A ceramic, clay or glass bowl to catch ash or hold the burning bundle
-
Matches or a lighter
-
An optional feather for gently fanning the smoke
It is lovely to keep these items in a dedicated place and reserve them solely for your smudging practice, allowing them to remain part of your sacred ritual.
There are many beautiful smudge bundles available, often blended with botanicals such as rose, mugwort, juniper, lavender, rosemary or palo santo, each bringing its own unique fragrance and energy.
The smudging ritual
- Before you begin, remove any animals or other people from the room if possible.
- Open a window before, during and after the ritual to allow the smoke—and with it any stagnant or negative energy—to leave the space.
- Light the end of the sage bundle with a match or lighter. The bundle should smoulder gently rather than burn with a flame. If it catches fire, simply blow it out.
- Allow the tips of the plant material to release a steady stream of smoke. Using your hand or a feather, gently guide the smoke around your body and throughout your space.
- Catch any falling ash in your bowl.
- Begin at the front door and move clockwise through the home or room. Take your time, allowing the smoke to reach corners, cupboards, hidden spaces and cherished objects. Move mindfully and with intention.
- When you have finished, extinguish the bundle completely using your bowl and a little water if needed.
When performed correctly, smudging is completely safe, but it is important to take sensible precautions.
-
Keep water nearby in case of emergencies.
-
Never leave a burning sage bundle unattended.
-
Ensure the bundle is fully extinguished after use.
-
Smoke alarms may be triggered, so be prepared.
-
People with asthma or other respiratory conditions may be sensitive to smoke and should take extra care.
-
Always keep a window open while smudging, as inhaling smoke for extended periods can be harmful.
And finally….
I hope you enjoy incorporating the smudging ritual into your home and self-care practice.
May it bring you peace, clarity, positive energy and a renewed sense of balance, leaving both your space and your spirit feeling lighter, calmer and beautifully refreshed.
